Hi -

Does anybody have a ready made fact sheet or information on WASH and education, that I could use to convince a potential funder of the vital importance of school WASH?

Any and all information would be very welcome, as I am collecting a body of evidence on this theme for a particular potential funder.

Many thanks!

Emily

Hello Emily,

Thank you for your question. Please find below some statistic on WASH in schools.

Global data on WASH in Schools report that 49% of schools lack access to safe drinking water and 55% the schools lack access to sanitation facilities in middle and low-income countries. Due to this many girls are absent from school during menstruation and children fail to have their obtain their child rights (WASH rights);

According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) data, nearly 58 million children of primary school age were not enrolled in school in 2012 and many of them will probably never enter a classroom. Improved WASH in Schools can contribute to reduce the number of out-of-school children, increase students attendance especially girls.

Providing students with access to WASH facilities can contribute to increased attendance, increased achievement and promote equality.

Hi Emily,

I delivered a TEDx talk on this issue earlier this year. The impact of this talk on our fundraising efforts has been dramatic with a number of individuals and corporates making immediate, substantial contributions after seeing the talk on YouTube

Please feel free to use it in any way that helps with your own efforts.

On a related note, I would be interested to know more about the project that you are raising funds for. Depending on the location and scale, we may be interested in making a contribution ourselves.

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sending through the link to your fantastic TEDx Talk - really powerful, and so aligned with what WaterAid is doing around sanitation. I will definitely send this through to the donor.

It is so great to see that your organisation that is focussing in on toilets and hygiene at school as a key determinant of women's education. I also love the humour that you brought in to your talk. WaterAid is actually holding a comedy festival for World Toilet Day in November - see https://www.wateraid.org/uk/get-involv... We also made this advert for Menstrual Hygiene Day imagining what the world would be like if men had periods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOMPS...

The project that we are currently seeking funds for is a Menstrual Hygiene Management programme for girls in Ethiopia. We have been trying to find funding for ...(more)
